200 Club After a lot of hard work behind the scenes from Paul Lynes and others, the 200 Club has been launched. It has been set up to raise funds to enable us to purchase the club premises and grounds outright. The draw will be made on the last Saturday morning of each month, just before the 10:30am training session. (based on 200 members) |

Sorry about the lack of news recently. Plenty to catch up on. Lightnings |
| 10.12.11 | Mince Pie Paddle next Saturday (17th). 10:00 for 10:30. Come in fancy dress, decorate a boat, bring food and drink, have fun. Let's hope the water isn't stiff. |
| 10.12.11 | Our new landing stage is complete and looks great. No more crumbling canal bank - lovely wooden decking instead. Well done to Graham, Neville and everyone else involved in pushing this forward. |
| 27.11.11 | Thank you to everyone who paddled or helped in the Ross Warland Memorial Canal Challenge today. Here are the provisional results. We know that there are a couple of times to add, and a few people put down as the wrong club. Please contact Graham Warlnad (address & e-mai on the entry form) with any amendments or queries. |
| 19.11.11 | Julie Wood has asked me to draw everyone's attention to the Easy Fundraising page. Happy to do so. |

| 28.10.11 | What happens when Chinese canoeists get irritated? |
| 27.10.11 | Graham has unearthed an intersting article about the restoration of the canalside brick kiln up at Fenny Compton. Having a look is a good excuse for a paddle up to Fenny. |
| 27.10.11 | Ian Warren has reported very low water levels between first and second locks, with narrowboats kicking up a lot of wash, and some getting grounded. If the levels stay low, it will make the Division 1-6 portages challenging on this section. |
| 25.10.11 | The Under 10 Hody and Under 12 lightning races at the Banbury Marathon will be starting at 12:15pm, not 1:30pm as previously advertised. |
| 19.10.11 | Having celebrated coming second in the Hasler Final, it is worth reflecting on the truly awe-inspiring victory of Elmridge canoe club. Of the 29 finishers all but six were junior paddlers and more than that all but one of their scoring paddlers were juniors with their one senior winning Div 2. This is a clear demonstration of the beauty of the Hasler competition where improvers are rewarded and encouraged. There are lessons for our club, the most important one being that no matter what you feel your ability is, if you turn up to the training sessions you will improve and you will have your day in the limelight. The other point is that junior paddlers learn more quickly than older paddlers, so the more juniors the merrier! The Lightning squad is fantastic at the moment and if they keep up their enthusiasm Banbury will continue to be a serious player in the Hasler competition and will improve in the national competitions. Our sincere thanks to Leighton Buzzard Canoe and Viking Kayak Clubs for organising this splendid event and arranging such spectacular weather! |
| 16.10.11 | There's been a spate of injuries and illnesses recently. Get well soon to Kathryn (appendix), Will (broken shoulder), Esme (broken wrist), Luke (sprained ankle), Josie (damaged ligaments), and, of course, to Darren. Hope you're all back on the water sooner than predicted. And as for tghe rest of you ... be careful out there! |
| 16.10.11 | Winners of 2011 Dingbats quiz, and answers. Thank you to everyone who took part. |
| 09.10.11 | Banbury Marathon details. |
| 04.10.11 | A lovely little video from the BBC of Paul Wycherley's world record channel crossing. Congratulations, Paul. |
| 04.10.11 | An incredible nineteen promotions after the Hasler Final: more than any other club. It's going to make the next few qualifying races a challenge, but with the rate that people are progressing, I suspect that these won't be the last promotions we see this season. Congratulations to the following: Div 4 to Div 3 - Ian Weir, Sophie Rooney Div 5 to Div 4 - Alice Murphy, Max Davison, Andy Flack. Div 6 to Div 5 - Ryan Francis, Katie Wood. Div 7 to Div 6 - Ray Pearce, Julie Wood. Div 8 to Div 7 - Jack Lovegrove, Helen Harper, Elena Ward, Dan O Donnell, Robin Flack, Andrew Lovegrove, Sam Jones, Div 9 to Div 7 - Isla Johnson, Neil Urquhart Div 9 to Div 8 - Dawn Buzzard. |
| 03.10.11 |
Congratulations to everyone who helped the club to achieve second place in the Hasler Final yesterday. A fantastic, and most unexpected, achievement. A huge number of good performances - not just the twelve scoring paddlers but all the others who placed highly, thus pushing other clubs back. Not bad for a village club. |
| 26.09.11 | Just as I was bemoaning the lack of articles this year, up pops the rather wonderful Mr Flack with this excellent account of Irish adventures. More, please. |
| 11.09.11 | There are some excellent things going on in the Midland region over the winter. As well as the duathlon series (running & paddling), thee is a series of five mile handicap races organised by Nottingham KC. These races all start at 10:00am, from NKC clubhouse. There is no entry fee. Dates are: 23rd October 2011 (This one clashes with the Windsor marathon). 20th November 2011 18th December 2011 15th January 2012 19th February 2012 18th March 2012 |
| 08.09.11 |
Disappointingly, the Poole Harbour Race has been postponed until 18th September, meaning that it clashes with Pangbourne. |
| 08.09.11 | Well done to Catherine et al for rescuing Bob the Duckling from the lock this evening. Bob is now back with mum. |
| 03.09.11 | Congratulations to Carl and Vicky Warland on the birth of Siena Rose at 10pm on 3rd September 2011. |
| 02.09.11 | The new season has started! First race is Pangbourne on 18th September. Sign up sheet is on the clubhouse noticeboard. |

Congratulations to everyone who did so well at the National Championships. And... National Lightning team champions Esme Davison, Toby Goater, Max Harper, Hannah Jault, Luke Johnson, Sandy Lobban, William McCracken, Arthur Urquhart, George Urquhart, Jessie Urquhart. Also, Div 8K1, 3rd Paul Smith |
| 18.08.11 | The National 5km finals, due to take place at Dreadnaught Reach this coming Saturday have been CANCELLED. |
| 16.08.11 | Why, oh, why, did the Ironbridge marathon have to clash with Fairport? Have a look at this must-watch video from Louise Clive of all the thrills and spills at Jackfield Rapids. Prepare to wince. |
| 15.08.11 | Coaches, here are details of the coach update day at Longridge on October 8th. There are some useful workshops: if, like me, you did the old Canoe Safety Test, there's a practical workshop to update to the new Foundation Safety and Rescue standards. For any coach working with juniors, there's a Safeguarding course - safeguarding will become compulsory, so if you haven't got it yet, book on this course. There are several other good workshops, someof which are modules which count toward the level 2 coach qualification. |
| 13.08.11 | Thank you to all the Farporters who have supported us by buying breakfasts, quizzes, tee-shirts, bricks and cakes. Your help has been fundamental in securing the future of the club. We now have new landlords: Banbury Charities have bought the clubhouse from British Waterways. This means that, whilst we still have to raise the money to buy the place, we no longer have to work against a horrifically short deadline. |
| 13.08.11 | Details of the National 5km championships organised by BDCC and marsport. |
| 11.08.11 | Because of low water levels, narrowboats are only being allowed through Claydon flight between 10am and 2pm. This is likely to cause a backlog of boats moving north after Fairport. Meanwhile, the Grand Union canal at Braunston is losing water because of a leak. And the name of the British Waterways manager in charge of repairing it? Lee King. Isn't that just perfect? |
| 10.08.11 | The Liffey Descent date has been changed to October 8th due to low water levels. |
| 09.08.11 | A total of 43 paddlers went on the club trip to the Wye (well, it wouldn't be Banbury if there were fewer than 40, would it). Despite a tummy bug which ripped through the junior members, everyone seemed to have a good time. Apart from the paddling, there was plenty of swimming in the river, walking in the woods, a trip to Go Ape and much larking around. |
| 31.07.11 | On Tuesday 9th August, training will be on the Thames at Wolvercote. If there is enough interest, there will be a junior session at 5pm, led by Dom & Irene. Parents will have to transport boats. Please reply to this mail if your children will be attending the session. The main session, led by Dan will be 6:30pm, on the water at 6:45. |
| 31.07.11 | A reminder that there will be limited 6:30pm/10:30am coaching and no 5:00pm/9:00am session on Thursday 4th August and Saturday 6th August, as Dan is away on holiday, and Dom, Irene and most of the other coaches are on the club camping trip to the Wye Valley. Matthew McLean is hoping to be able to take coaching, but even if he can't, the club will be open on both of those days and suggested training sessions are on the schedule on the noticeboard. |
| 30.07.11 | Are we all ready for the club camping trip to the Wye? Meet up at the club on Wednesday morning to load boats and be ready for an 11:00am departure for Mordiford. If you're interested in doing Go Ape during the trip, please let David know. |
| 29.07.11 | Summer dingbats quizzes are now available, £1 each. The majority of these will be sold during the Fairport festival, but if you can sell some to workmates, friends or neighbours, please take some from the folder on the clubhouse table. Leave a note to say how many you have taken. |
| 26.07.11 |
Final Southern region league table. This table is unofficial and includes only those races run since September 2011. |
| 25.07.11 | Well done to our lightning paddlers. As the season's end approaches, we are in the lead in the Geoff Sanders trophy. We now need to make sure that we have the strongest possible team out at the Hasler final to ensure that Ealing, Richmond and the ret can't overhaul us. Current standings: 1. Banbury 590 2. Ealing 564 3. Richmond. 435 4. Falcon 373 5. Lincoln 349 6. Norwich 314 7. Chester 304 8. Macclesfield 293 9. Chelmsford 278 9. Southampton 278 |
| 24.07.11 | Irrespective of the result of the Wokingham marathon, or of any other complications, we are Southern Region champions. This is a stunning achievement for a small-town club. Well done to everybody who has paddled, and to Phredd and Andy for excellent team management. This is the first time in at least twelve years that Reading haven't won the championship. Now it's over to dan to start picking the Hasler final team. Please make sure you sign up for availability - the entries have to be in very soon. |
| 18.07.11 |
Excellent team performance at yesterday's Southampton marathon. Challenging racing conditions made for a very enjoyable race - lots of gusty wind and confused chop. Funnily enough, the mass sessions on the canal simulated the conditions pretty well. Loads of winners and orher medallists - or muggists - Great win for Paul & Jack in Div 9, and so nearly a win for Tamsen & Kate in 8 (we won't mention the turn). A storming win for Guy in his first Div 7 since promotion - probably his last Div 7, too, and first place for Andy and Max despite the Chuckle Brothers act at the portage. As for the new venue - good, apart from the difficulties of getting the lower div boats on the water in time and the interesting portage - out at one set of steps and in at the next might be a better option. Things are looking good for the Southern Region championship: we must have scored heavily enough to be there or thereabouts, and with one race to go, and a fourth as our dropped result, it's ours to lose, I think. Lightnings too are looking good. They must have scored a whack of points and may be closing the gap on Ealing in the Sanders trophy. |
| 07.07.11 |
Well done to the sprint team for 7th place in the National inter-club championships. 45 teams competed. |
| 25.06.11 |
Latest regional Hasler tables. These tables are unofficial, but should be accurate. Southern region sees five teams fighting for four Hasler final places. Banbury lead by three points from Reading, with Basingstoke close behind. These three look safe, but behind them, Falcon and Southampton are just a point apart. With Southampton's home race to come, Falcon will have to launch a determined challenge if they are to qualify. It's a similar story in Eastern region, with Norwich, Leighton and Chelmsford clear of trouble, leaving the Barking Bishops battling for the last berth. As I understand it, five teams qualify from LSE (why that is, I'm not sure - can anyone enlighten me?) and with several races to go it all looks done and dusted. Burton are running away with Midland region - more tens than an olympic gymnastics competition - and once again, qualification looks to be decided already: eight teams well clear, with the other five fallen off the wash. Qualification from the other regions is straightforward, but even so, competiton is fierce in the North-West with all four teams on the same points. |

Sorry for the lack of activity on the website recently - I've had no internet. Good luck to our two Cheshire Ring teams: will Banbury claim a new course record for a third year in a row. Conditions look good, and the teams look strong on paper. |
| 25.06.11 | Sign up sheets for the Southampton marathon and for the national championships are up in the club. |

| 30.05.11 | Latest Hasler Tables for all regions. |
| 30.05.11 |
A disappointing team result at the Reading Hasler yesterday: we were only fourth, behind Reading, Basingstoke and Southampton, despite putting out a fairly strong team. All the recent promotions have taken their toll, for whilst there were plenty of good individual performances, we racked up lots of 17s and 18s rather than the 20s that we needed. Some of the notable results were a strong 4th for Irene and Ray in 7K2, good debuts from Rhiannon and Siobhan, 11th for Robin Flack inhis first Div 8 race, a win for Esme in U10 girls, and a 3rd for Tom in U10 boys, 3rd for Alice & Tasha in 5K2, with Max and Gary in 4th, 4th for David W & Andy in 6K2, demonstrating their patented portage technique, and 4th for Becca and Sophie in 4K2, with Iain Weir and friend in 5th. Results - unofficial - just from my adding up: But on the bright side, we now have 26 paddlers qualified K1 for the Hasler finals, and another 25 qualified K2. |
| 18.05.11 |
A good set of results from the Basingstoke Marathon, considering that we put out a relatively small team with some big hitters missing. Congratulations to Becca, Dan O and Robin F on their promotions, and congratulations too to the lightning team for amassing a huge 121 points between them. We were second on the day behind Southampton with Basingstoke third. This keeps us at the top of the Southern Region table for the moment, but the next few races are all in Reading's backyard so we need to keep putting out strong teams if we want to stay there. We now have a reasoanble number of people qualified for the Hasler Final. Hopefully this number will continue to grow - to qualify, you need to do three races, and there are plenty of people sitting thee on one or two. |
| 10.05.11 | Time trial results from this evening. |
| 09.05.11 | Some good performances at the sprints including three wins for Sophie, one for Alice and one for the Boys K4. I'm sure there are plenty of others I've missed. Post your performances up on the blog page - it's abouit time someone put something on there. |
| 09.05.11 | Andy Flack, video star (And sailor) |
| 08.05.11 | Some people have been asking how long the intervals that we do in training are, so here goes: 2nd Bridge to 3rd Bridge 550 metres. 1st Lock (tree) to Big Bend 600 metres 1st Lock (tree) to 2nd Lock (Shuttering) 1200m. 2nd Lock to 3rd Lock 1200 metres. All the main lock to lock distances can be forund on the Time Trials pages. |
| 08.05.11 | Nice to see Debbie and Keith Anderson paddling at the club this morning. Welcome back! |
| 01.05.11 | Becca Seika finished a very pleasing fifth in the assessment race at Bedford today, beating some big names in the process. |
| 01.05.11 | A video of the last part of Alice & Dan's DW. |
| 29.04.11 | If anyone's thinking of doing DW next year, high tides on Sunday 7th April are at 3am and 4pm, so a choice of leaving Devizes in the early hours of Saturday morning, and facing the prospect of the tideway in the dark, or leaving it very late. Discuss. |
| 29.04.11 | Latest regional Hasler tables. Good to see mpre racing happening up in the Yorkshire region, wher Pennine and Kingston are contesting the top places. As usual, Linlithgow and Kirkaldy are dividing the spoils in Scotland. Not long now until Southern region roars into life again. You are doing Basingstoke, aren't you? Sign up sheet is in the clubhouse. |
| 27.04.11 | Alice's account of the DW. |
| 25.04.11 |
Irene finished the DW in just under 27 hours, placing 6th in the Ladies K1. Superb effort!
|
| 25.04.11 |
Congratulations to Dan and Alice who have won the mixed doubles in the Devizes to Westminster race in 21 hours 2 minutes - an outstanding achievement. Ray and Melanie were amongst the 26% of competitors to retire from the race: they were in good company - Ivan Lawler and Ben Brown dropped out too. ![]() |
| 21.04.11 | A reminder that it's the club Easter Egg hunt this afternoon from 4:00 to 6:00pm. Irene has organised a mixture of sprint and obstacle races, all around the theme of easter eggs. Suitable for 8-14 year olds, the session costs £1. Adult helpers are very welcome. |
| 21.04.11 | There will be no coached sessions this Saturday as Dan and Irene are both competing in the DW and most of the other coaches are involved in crewing. |
| 20.04.11 | Congratulations to our London Marathoners. Max finished in 3:31 and Josie in 5:42. |
| 20.04.11 | So who was the mystery paddler spotted on Tuesday? A young lady in a predator K1, accompanied by a lad on the bank. Did a session and then disappeared just as everyone was ariving for the evenimng training. Most mysterious. |
| 14.04.11 | Ben Brown's DW blog. |
| 13.04.11 | The first adult beginner course finished this evening: a very promising group of paddlers. The junior course is going well, too. Thank you to everybody who has helped with coaching. |
| 10.04.11 | Latest regional Hasler tables following Cambridge, Chester, Gailey and Anker Valley. |
| 10.04.11 |
Well done to Mealnie and Ray for a striong 6:45:32 for 12th place in waterside D mixed doubles, and to Irene for 8th place in ladies K1 in 7:34:03. Alice and dan time trialled the course the pervious day in 5:41 which would have seen them 4th in mixed doubles. |
| 10.04.11 | Good luck to Max, John and Josie, all of whom are competing in the London Marathon next Sunday. |
| 09.04.11 |
The marathon season has restarted with a smattering of out of region races. Tony Gonzalez put in a good effort to come 6th in Div 7 at Cambridge - a choppy course which is not best suited to diggers. Peter Button was 14th in Div at Anker Valley, whilst Dom Murphy was 10th in Div 4 after a lengthy swim following a pile-up on the start line. It's heartening to see bigger fields in the North-West, and the team results suggest theat it's going to be a competitive season: after three races, only one point separates Macclesfield, Trentham, Chester and Runcorn. Eastern region clubs have attracted some new paddlers over the winter, judging by the eleven people - almost half the field - promoted from Division 9 at Cambridge. With only two races held, Norwich, Chelmsford and Leightin Buzzard have a slight gap over the rest. Fourteen teams are contesting Midland region, though with eight teams to qualify, big clubs such as Worcester can pick and choose their races. They currently lie 8th, on 14 points, having only contested two of the four races. Burton and Lincoln are way clear of the rest on 38 and 27 points respectively. No action in the rest of the regions yet. The first southern region race is Basingstoke in May. We will need to field a strong team to maintain our lead in the table, with Reading, Basingstoke and Falcon all well within striking distance. Some high quality fields, too, in the Midlands, though with eight teams to qualify, |
| 09.04.11 | Nice to see so many people on the water today - especially the thirteen lightning paddlers vying for the seven lightnings! A very promising adult beginner group in the afternoon, too. Next week sees the junior holiday course every morning: All help with coaching will be appreciated.! |
| 27.03.11 | Congratulations to Rebecca Seika, 4th Under 16, and 9th overall in the Ghent international marathon - a brilliant international debut, and by the look of the results, a good sprint finish. Top Ten 1. Femke Weckx (NED) 1:34:39 2. Hermien Peters (NED) 1:34:40 (U16) 3. Vicky Croucher (GBR) 1:35:12 (U16) 4. Alina Gieres (GER) 1:38:57 5. Justin DeRore (NED) 1:40:34 6. | 13.03.11 |
Like everybody else, we get bombarded by spam e-mails. Greetings |
| 13.03.11 | An excellent tuen out for training yesterday, with over fifty people on the water (and, ahem, several people in the water). Thank you to dan and Elana for organising the time trials. |
| 12.03.11 | Congratulations to Sam Davison who has passed his driving test. All you need now is a nice set of v-bars, Sam. |

Dates and prices for the Olympic Sprint regatta have been announced. Regatta is from 6th to 11th August, and £20 tickets are available for all days except finals days. The slalom competition dates have also been announced: 29th July to 1st August. |
| 05.02.11 | Remember last Summer when Louis from Banbury Sound came to try kayaking? Thank you to David for finding this on youtube. |
| 05.02.11 | Dan nearly took a swim today. Must have been a really wobbly boat... |
| 04.02.11 | National fame! Listen to Colette discussing marathon canoeing on the Simon Mayo show on radio 2 tonight. She nesarly persuades the host to have a go. |
| 23.01.11 | A piece of film of a canoe marathon race in 1927. Bank-to-bank with high kneeling boats. Wouldn't fancy that portage. |
| 23.01.11 | Thank you to Robin Avery for another excellent video technique analysis session today. Superb. And what a lovely bit of water: perfect for 500m time trials. And that 1800 metre tunnel is sooooo tempting... |
| 19.01.11 | The Banbury duathlon has had to be CANCELLED because the club has no water supply at the moment. Apologies for this. |
| 18.01.11 | Chris Jones' latest article. Wanlip and Belvoir |
| 17.01.11 | White Craft tops not suitable for flood relief, shock! |
| 17.01.11 | Thank you to Robin Avery for organising Sunday's technique day at Braunston. The second one is on 23rd January. |
| 15.01.11 | Good results from today's Barrow WWR race. Lovely bit of river. Plenty of water in it- would have been perfectly paddleable in an understern boat - and it was tonking along. Dom was 1st Wavehopper, Gary was 3rd composite boat, and Chris J overtook plenty during the race - don't know his position yet, though. We await the Division B results. |
| 15.01.11 | Well done to Alice for securing a £5000 grant toward the clubhouse appeal. Excellent work! Total is just under £70,000 now. David will be speaking to the BBC (once again) on Monday. |
| 09.01.11 | A gentleman who lives in Kyetts Corner, Cropredy, came to the club this morning, chatted to Graham for a while about how the Clubhouse Appeal was going, and then gave him a cheque for £100. How wonderful is that! Many and heartfelt thanks to this gentleman. |
| 09.01.11 | Dr Woodcock would like to announce that the total raised so far for the clubhouse appeal is £64684.33. A fantastic effort. |
| 08.01.11 | Normal service is resumed! How nice to be back on the water again today, even with the cold wind and drizzly rain. 25 people out for the 10am session, and well done to lightning paddlers Tom and Luke for turning up for the 9am session. |
| 05.01.11 | Recognise anyone in the photos? If you don't spot anyone you know, refresh the page. |
| 02.01.11 | A few more additions to the jokes page. |
| 02.01.11 | Banbury paddlers made up over half the entries for the Soar Valley Resolution Race yesterday - all seven of us! Well doen to Chris H and Max for winning the K2 race, and to Irene for being the only lady to finish the 10 mile course with its numerous twists, turns, daft portages and possibilities of gettng lost. |
| 30.12.10 | A new page for the humour section. Fauxtography is what happens when you let a bored paddler loose on photoshop. |
| 24.12.10 | Some welcome news. The January issue of canoeist magazine is available to download. Stuart Fisher does a truly excellent job - it's a real labour of love. He really ought to include a paypal button on his website to offset some of the cost. |

| 23.12.10 | Even more stuff on the jokes page now, including a couple of very barbed cartoon videos from Ivan Lawler. |

| 23.12.10 | Julie has put a load of new photos in the gallery. |
| 21.12.10 | Up do date Hasler Tables for all regions. Apart from Southern region, these are unofficial as I've worked them out from results on the marathon website. |
| 19.12.10 | Jokes page has been updated. Still some glitches which mean text and pictures are misaligned, but at least it's published. |
| 19.12.10 | Thank you to David, Josie, Rob, Max and everybody else who worked so hard to make Friday's Comedy Night and auction of promises such a success. Thanks, too, to Silkie for such an excellent gig, and to Banbury United for use of their facilities. Over £3000 raised and a good time had by all - even if some of us didn't manage to get home until Sunday afternoon! |
| 18.12.10 | Thank you to everyone who helped with the bagpacking at Sainsbury's on Wednesday evening. Although the bad weather kept shoppers away (at times it seemed as if there were more paddlers than punters), we collected well over £300. Thank you to Julie for all the organisation. |
| 18.12.10 | Thank you to Geoff Barber and everyone at Solihull Canoe Club for their very kind donation to the Clubhouse appeal. |
| 27.11.10 | The Ross Warland Memprial Canal Challenge has been CANCELLED as the course is frozen. Apologies for this. |

Clubhouse appeal£2100 raised so far.An appeal page and a paypal button is now setup. |
| 19.09.10 | The Geoff Sanders trophy, for lightnings, will be decided at the Hasler Final in October. Currently, Banbury lies 8th out of 48 clubs. The destination of the trophy is already decided - Ealing have an unassailable lead - but there is a chance that our paddlers could battle their way into the top five. Current positions: 1. Ealing 348 2. Leighton Buzzard 185 3. Chester 174 4. Trentham 173 5. Linlithgow 137 5. Southampton 137 7. Kirkaldy 118 8. Banbury 112 9. Nottingham 110 10. Lincoln 105 11. Norwich 93 12. Clubhouse appealWe were visited today by local MP Tony Baldry who turned up in a very tasty red MG with set Catherine's heart a-flutter. He made a very generous donation of £100 to the clubhouse appeal and offered us some very useful advice. Contrary to popular rumour, he did not go straight up to Matthew nd say, "Boris! Glad you could make it." And the previous evening, the club was featured on BBC Oxford TV news, with budding luvvy David Woodcock the star of the show. |
| 16.09.10 |
Clubhouse appealWe are off the mark: £606 raised so far. Thanks to Josie, Collette, Chris and David for their efforts on this.
Our campaign has also been covered in today's Banbury Guardian, on Banbury Sound yesterday, and BBC Oxford TV and radio were at the club today - with broadcast tomorrow or early next week.
If you've seen or heard the campaign then you'll know we are under severe time pressure to raise the money. If you'd like to donate, and help us continue to develop international paddlers, and be based in Cropredy then please do email us on

Clubhouse appeal
The fundraising campaign to purchase the clubhouse has begun. Time is short, and we are lobbying to push back the deadline. We will need support from everyone to raise money, and a dedicated fundraising page is under construction. For now, though, both club members and members of the public can help us by: |
| 05.09.10 | Lots of new photos on the Gallery. I've finally figured out how to publish them: takes ages to upload 'em, mind. |
| 05.09.10 | The latest social from the fertile mind of Dr Woodcock is a table football evening at his abode on October 1st. Suitable for all ages and abilities - plenty of pizza available too. See the noticeboard for details. |
| 05.09.10 | Well done to the sprint team for some good performances on the regatta lake. More details when I get them. |
| 30.08.10 | After the Longridge Marathon we have 61 divisional paddlers qualifed for the Hasler Final. Now all we need to do is make sure that we get bums on seats on the start line at Worcester. Please check here to see if you've qualified. If you have, then add your name to the list in the clubhouse, or contact Phredd to say that you are available. Midlands region table is now updated. Eight teams qualify from this region. London & South-East table also updated. This region has five teams to qualify - not sure why: perhaps someone can enlighten me. This gives an unofficial qualifying list as follows: EASTERN - Norwich, Leighton Buzzard, Chelmsford, Bishop's Stortford. FORCES - Army, Navy, RAF. LSE - Richmond, Elmbridge, Wey, Maidstone, Tonbridge. MIDLANDS - Nottingham, Burton, Solihull, Worcester, Lincoln, Anker Valley, Gailey, Shropshire. NORTH WEST - Macclesfield, Trentham, Runcorn, Chester. SCOTLAND - Kirkaldy, Linlithgow, Forth, Integrate. SOUTHERN - Reading, Banbury, Southampton, Basingstoke Canal. SOUTH WEST - Fowey River, PLymouth College, Exeter, Truro & Hayle WALES - Cardiff Bay. |
| 29.08.10 |
Well, we came very close, but it wasn't quite enough in the end. Congratulations to Reading for winning the Southern Region title. |
| 19.08.10 | New beginner courses start next week - see courses pages for details. |
| 19.08.10 | I see that the Banbury Guardian didn't have room for the Ironbridge race report. I'll send it in again. |
| 19.08.10 | Congratulations to Matthew McLean, Phredd McLean, Alice Murphy, Sophie Rooney and Roger Weir who have all completed their Level 1 coach course. They'll soon be joined by Chris Hills, Julie Wood, Katie Wood and Megan Wood. |
| 17.08.10 | Our intrepid tandem team have begun their charity challenge to cover the length and breadth of Britain on tndem bikes and tandem kayaks. They started at John O Groats, and were last heard of at Tyndum a few miles eaast of Oban, having successfully climbed Ben Nevis on thoer way south. Follow their progress here. |
| 17.08.10 | Thank you to everybody who helped with the Fairport breakfasts over the weekend. A tremendous effort from all concerned, especially the Saturday crew who battled against the worst of the weather. No news yet on how much we made, but enough, hopefully to cover most of the clubhouse rent for another year. |

A video, courtesy of Gailey CC, of Jackfield Rapids during Sunday's Ironbridge Marathon. |
| 05.08.10 | Quite what, or who, disturbed the wasps' nest beyond First Lock we don't know, but it was paddlers who bore the brunt of the waps' reaction with stings for Katie, Elena, Micky and Ian. Not fun. At least it gave Katie an entry in this year's Best Excuse for a Swim competition - I lost my balance because I was preocuupied by the wasp that was stinging my ear. Colette has also entered the competition with - I was picking blackberries. Good effort, Colette, but somehow lacks the sense of incipient danger. |

Two race reports from Chris Hills: the Cheshire Ring and the Bath to Bradford Race. Apologies to Chris that it has taken me so long to get this put up on the website. Also, an article from Andy Flack which has been on the site for a while, but which you may have missed. Kayaking Around Bardsey |
| 26.07.10 | We now have 56 divsional paddlers qualified for the hasler final. There is still time for more people to qualify, with the Ironbridge and Medway marathons (both 8th August), the Tonbridge marathon (22nd August) and Longridge (29th August), plus, of course, the national championships this coming weekend. |
| 26.07.10 |
A good day's racing at Wokingham yesterday. I can't do my normal results predicition as I had to leave before the higher division results came out, but we scored good points in the lower divisions thanks to some excellent performances. |
| 20.07.10 |
Swimmers' page has been updated. Please check to see that I've credited you with the correct number of swims. The Mikron Theatre Company are making a welcome return this weekend and wil be performing in the club bgrounds on both Saturday and Sunday evening. Well worth seeing. South-West region Hasler table has been updated after the Camel River marathon. Watch out in future years for the name Bronte Holden. An under 10 girl, she won Div 9 K1. Div 3 by the time she's 14, that's my prediction. |
| 18.07.10 | There will be no organised training groups on Saturday 31st July or Sunday 1st August as all of the regular coaches will be up in CHester for the National Championships. |
| 08.07.10 | The July Sprint regatta results have been published on the Wey website. Go to their news page. |
| 07.07.10 | South-West Hasler table after the Lower Exe race. Devizes won it; the first points they'ver picked up this season. Are there enough races left for them to gain a qualifying position? Interesting... |
| 06.07.10 | Tonight's time trial results. Where were you all? We had a couple of guests, Dean & Fiona from Norwich Canoe Club, and I told them airily, "Oh, there'll be about 40 people for the time trial". Er... no. Try 24. I know, i know - World cup semi-final. Nothing to do with the words time" and"trial" adjacent. |
| 05.07.10 | Well done to the sprint team for some good individual performances at the weekend, in appalling weather conditions, and in Bill's case, in appalling pyjamas (don't ask). And yes, Iain, it does count as a swim if your boat sinks. |
| 27.06.10 |
It was only a small team (31 paddlers) that we took to Southampton, but what a performance. Only one win (Robin in U12 boys), but plenty of second and third places, giving an unexpected and very pleasing second place overall. This puts us back on top of the Southern Region table with 73 points to Reading's 72, though the clubs are level on countback as Reading drop a 7 to our 8. Congratulations to Max Davison, promoted to Division 6 and Micky White, promoted to Division 5 at Southampton. |
| 26.06.10 | With three races to go in the Southern region, including tomorrow's Southampton marathon, it looks very likely that we will qualify along with Reading. We are sitting fairly comfortably in second place, with a ten point advantage over third placed Southampton. The other two qualifying places are very much up for grabs. Southampton are looking good for third spot, with the advantage of their home race tomorrow, but Basingstoke need to be looking over their shoulders at a resurgent Falcon who are only four points behind them and closing fast. Pangbourne have an outside chance of qualification, but are probably too far back. And what of the other regions? With eight teams to qualify in the Midland region, there is a bit more breathing space for the top clubs and things look fairly clear-cut. Nottingham ought to qualify as champions, with Burton, Lincoln, Solihull and Worcester following them through. There is a bit of a gap to Anker Valley, Gailey and Shropshire, but these three look pretty comfortable as Leamington and Hereford are too far off the pace. It's all done and dusted in Eastern region. Irrespective of what happens in the remaining races, the qualifiers are decided. Norwich should win, with Leighton Buzzard and Chelmsford picking up the scraps, and Bishop's Stortford taking the fourth spot, some way adrift. By way of contrast, things couldn't be much tighter in London & South East region, with six teams separeated by eight points. Elmbridge, Richmond and Maidstone have a narrow advantage over Royal, Tonbridge and There is a real prospect of Wey not making it to the final. Ealing really ought to be in that mix as well, but for some reason, they seem to target Southern region races rather than LSE ones. There doesn't seem to be a marathon table for Wales, but I hope someone ensures that Cardiff Bay Paddlers are invited to the finals: their orange vests are becoming a distinctive feature of races around the country. The Scottish marathon scene deserves to be better supported too. With such interesting water up there, it's a shame that only five clubs contest the Hasler races. KIrkaldy will win, with Linlithgow second, followed by Forth and Integate. It's a similar story in the North-West: some interesting and varied water, but not enough teams supporting the races. Trentham's arrival has made a difference in recent years though, and they are battling Macclesfield for top spot. Runcorn and chester will pick up the pieces. Finally, down in the South-West, Fowey are dominant and will win the title. Plymouth College have done well to stay ahead of Exeter, and Truro will take the fourth spot. |
| 24.06.10 | Another six divisional paddlers qualified for the Hasler Final at the Oxford marathon, bringing our total up to 50, plus lightnings. 84 paddlers have compteted for the club so far this season. Congratulations to the following, who have been promoted: Sophie Rooney, to Division 4 Ian Warren, to Division 5 Paul Lynes, to Division 5; Will Austin, to Divison 6; Sam Davison, to Division 7; Annaleis Flack, to Division 8; Ryan Francis, to Divison 8. |
| 23.06.10 | Well done to everyone for their tremendous efforts at Oxford. Sadly, despite all that we did, we still ended up coming second to Reading, scoring 226 to their 235. It should actually be 227 as Div 6K2 has been calculated incorrectly, but that doesn't alter the fact that Reading thumped us. Hats off to them. |
| 22.06.10 | Sorry the news page isn't being updated very often at the moment: normal service will be resumed when I've got time to draw breath. In the meantime, here's the North West Hasler table after the Macclesfield Adelphi marathion. |
| 17.06.10 | Latest Southern region table. Following our third place at Pangbourne, Reading are now leel on points with us, but go ahead on countback. It's gettng interesting in the chasing pack, with Falcon picking up big points with their home race to come. Midlands and LSE tables. |
| 16.06.10 | Results of last night's time trial. |
| 13.06.10 |
Some good performances in today's Pangbourne Marathon. We had a bumper crop of 48 paddlers out, and they did well. A fine win in Div 1 for Dan, roared home by the rest of the Banbury team. Laura Tanner, after saying "I don't think I'll be good enough to race" won Div 8K2 with Julie. Lucy Ryan was second in 6K1, Andy Flack was 2nd in 8K1 Ryan and Abbie were second in 9K2 after another blistering start, and Max Harper was 2nd in U10 boys. Plenty of promotions, too. Lucy Ryan and Gary Harper up to 5, Andy Flack up to 7 and Rob Austin and Andrew Lovegrove up to 8, despite coming 8th and 9th in 9K1. Must have been a very strong field. There should be several promotions form K2 to add to these. We now have 43 paddlers qualifed for the Hasler Final, and plenty more who are only one race away from qualifiaction. |
| 11.06.10 | Congratulations to Alice on passing her driving test. |
| 10.06.10 | New beginner course dates have been published: please see the courses pages. If you know anyone who might be interested, please let them know. |
| 09.06.10 | Good news! An article from Chris Jones. Well worth waiting for - one of his best. |
| 09.06.10 | North-West region hasler table. |
| 08.06.10 | A bumper crop of swimmers over the last few days. Sam Davison has a clear lead, but there is a chasing pack jockeying for second place. Impressive entry to the lists for Mark with eight immersions in one night form a succession of unfeasibly wobbly boats. Remembre the club motto - Who Dares, Swims. |
| 08.06.10 | Congratulations to Iain Weir on passing his driving test, and to Sophie Rooney and Tasha McLean on theirrespective promotions to Girls' "A" and Girls' "C". |
| 07.06.10 | Four of our newer members, James, Guy, Nick and Claire have joined the club specifically to train for an endurance event, Britain in Tandem, which aims to cover the length, breadth and height of Britain using tandem cycles and K2s. Have a look at their website here |
| 06.06.10 | Some photos from the sprints. Thank you to Rachel for these. |
| 04.06.10 |
A flurry of promotions after the Reading Marathon; some of them expected, some of them rather surprising. Congratulations (or commisorations) to all. |
| 02.06.10 | Scottish Hasler Table. North-West Hasler Table. Still awaiting results of the Chester Marathon which took place way back on 23rd May. |
| 01.06.10 | Congratulations to Sophie on passing her driving test today. Just remember not to wash hang on the motorway, Soppy. |
| 30.05.10 | |
| 30.05.10 |
Well, the sun shone on the racing at Reading today, but my oh my, wasn't it lumpy? Gusty wind against the flow mixed in with the wash from the Hoorays in their gin palaces produced some interesting water. Congratulations to Max Davison on promotion to Div 7 after taking 2nd in Div 8, and to Ian Warren, promoted to Div 6 after 6th in a high quality 7K1. Bound to be some K2 promotions too after a huge win for Tasha & Iain, a 2nd for Abbie & Ryan, a resounding win for dan in Div 2 K1 and several other high placings. |
| 29.05.10 | Well done to all who attended the first day of the Level 1 Coaching certificate course today. Thank you to John Handyside for putting it on, and to Graham for all his hard work behind the scenes. |
| 24.05.10 | Latest Midlands region Hasler table. It's a fairly safe bet that Nottingham will be at the Hasler finals - they're running away with it. Things are a bit closer in the Eastern region, though Norwich will take some catching. |
| 24.05.10 | The club gym and clubroom will be out of action until 6pm this Saturday (29th May) because of the Level 1 coach course. Training will be on as normal, but please be very quiet in the kitchen area and if passing through the clubroom to use the changing rooms. |
| 23.05.10 | Runners vs Paddlers report and results. Thank you to David W for organising and to everyone who helped, particularly to the Flack and Johnson families for manning the barbecue. See comments from the Cherwell Runners forum. |
| 19.05.10 | Latest time trial results. |
| 17.05.10 | We won the Basingstoke Marathon! Team Results Congratulations to all who took part Individual Results The team results mean that we are still at the top of the Southern Region table. If we can get strong teams out for the upcoming Reading, Oxford and Southampton marathons, we have every chance of maintaining this lead. |
| 17.05.10 | Latest London & South East Region table. |
| 16.05.10 | Latest issue of Canoe and Kayak Racing magazine, all the way from America. Nice article about the DW. |
| 16.05.10 | Over 50 entries from the club for today's Basingstoke canal marathon. Astounding! Good luck to all. If someone could get me a printout of the results' I'd be grateful. |
| 15.05.10 | Mark Evans raised over £1000in sponsorship for Guide Dogs by doing last Sunday's Doggy Paddle. A tremendous achievement. If you wish to add to that total, Mark would love to hear from you. |
| 09.05.10 | Hasler qualification page has been updated. We now have 26 paddlers qualified for the Hasler Final. This number should rise a little after Basingstoke.... Midlands Hasler table has been updated, following Worcester Marathon. |
| 02.05.10 | A bumper set of swims this weekend, from what I'm told. Billie, Jonesy, David and Lucy all testing the waters of the Severn at Worcester, Ian W and Max taking a refreshing dip in the Thames, and Catherine falling out into all of an inch of the Oxford Canal. What jolly fun. |
| 01.05.10 | Good to see so many people at training this morning. All the lightnings and scouts in use for the nine o'clock session, and plenty of other boats besides, and thirty-one people on the water for the 10:30 session. |
| 26.04.10 |

Congratulations to Dave Gallimore, promoted to Masters B at the April Sprints. |
| 14.04.10 |
Plenty going on this Sunday, 18th April. Firstly, Graham is organising a race training session on the Thames at Wolvercote in the morning. Please see the sign-ip sheet in the clubhouse. Secondly, Irene is organising an Easter Egg Hunt at the clubhouse in the afternoon from 2 - 4pm, This will be a junior fun afternoon with a mix of sprint and egg obstacle races, and a few challenges on dry land. All standards are welcome. The prizes will, of course, be Easter eggs. If any adults would like to stay and help please let Irene know: she will need adults to steer the Canadian canoes. |
| 14.04.10 | A few tweaks an changes to the Hasler race rules. There is no longer a doubles race for divisions 1 and 2 for regional Hasler races, but they remain in place for the Hasler Finals. There is now either a division 3 singles race or a division 3 doubles race in regional Hasler races, but both co-exist in the Hasler Finals. In the Hasler Finals the best 6 singles results and best 3 doubles results count for each club. In the Nationals, divisional races are now restricted to divisions 7, 8 and 9. There is now an Open Mixed doubles race. |
| 12.04.10 | Sid the Psycho Swan has gone into his annual testosterone fuelled fury and is liable to attack any kayak that has the temerity to venture onto his manor. Unless you can convince him that you are a bigger and more macho swan than he is, please treat him as an additional portage or hide behind a passing narrowboat until the red mist fades from his eyes. |

As previously mentioned, On Saturday 24th April, Ron Heritage of the Inland waterways Association (IWA) will set out from Banbury to retrace the voyage of Tom Rolt's Cressy, this year being the centenary of Tom Rolt's birth. Events in Banbury start at 10:30am, with Ron sallying forth at 12:00 noon. It would be lovely to have a flotilla of kayaks down at Banbury to be part of the celebrations. More details about the voyage can be found at http://www.banburycanalday.co.uk/Canal_Day_2010/canal_day_2010.htm |

A good weekend's racing coming up. Saturday April 24th sees our own WildWater Race on the Avon at Stratford, then on Sunday April 25th it's the Anker Valley Marathon. This is an out of region race, near Nuneaton. Nice location, friendly host club and excellent refreshments. What more could you ask. Details of both races are on the race calendar (click on calendar, not on calendar table). |
| 05.04.10 | Friends of Allonby Canoe Club are hosting a 5km race on Sunday 18th April in Albert Dock Liverpool. It's a long way to go to race three miles, but what a spectacular location for a race. Plenty of nearby attractions such as the Albert Dock itself, Tate Gallery and Maritime Museum. For those who haven't come across FoA Canoe Club before, they are to Polo what Elmbridge are to Marathon. Contact Dom or Graham for full details of the event. |
| 04.04.10 | Now, I know that we're in the Southern Region, but as East Midlands Region starts at the Northamptonshire border, it's worth having a look at the East Midlands regional website http://www.empaddlers.org/ which contains some interesting stuff. |
| 04.04.10 |
